NC #574 Saving DTNS, Ikan Smartphone Gimbal, Affinity Photo Part 1

I’m back from vacation, and so thankful to Bart and Allister for taking care of the show while I was gone. This week we’ll talk about how Steve and I saved the Daily Tech News Show with Tom Merritt and the price he had to pay for our help, we’ll hear an interview from NAB 2016 with Ikan about their Smartphone gimbal, and I’ll give you part one of my Affinity Photo review. This is an application that’s so huge and powerful for only $50 that I had to split it in two. This week is all about how to use the Affinity Extensions and next time we’ll talk about all of the advanced features you get with the standalone application.

Hi this is Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast Mac Podcast, hosted at Podfeet.com, a technology geek podcast with an EVER so slight Macintosh bias. Today is Sunday May 8, 2016 and this is show number 574. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms out there! Lindsay and Kyle and Steve took really good care of me today, I hope you were cherished as well.

I will never cease to be amazed by the generosity of the community we have in the NosillaCastaways, with the most shining examples being Bart and Allister. For two weeks they carried the show in style. I loved listening to both of their NosillaCasts. Hearing Bart’s rant about irresponsible “journalism” (and I put that in quotes on purpose) about Apple supposedly admitting to planned obsolescence was really interesting. It was also interesting to have that rant bookended with the rant against Apple about their lack of attention to security in allowing QuickTime continue to be available to Windows users even when they’re not supporting it and fixing some scary bugs. Those two articles together show how unbiased he is that he will defend Apple when they’re being wrongly accused, and call them on the carpet when they’re misbehaving.

I know he said that he was worried about doing Security Bits without my constant interruptions, and it warmed my heart that he thinks I add value to that part by asking the questions you all want asked. I’ve heard this before from other people and like I said I’m flattered – I simply ask questions when I’m confused and it all seems to turn out well in the end. But the work Bart does to put together the extensive notes, and the research he does to keep us aware of when and how often we should light our hair on fire is the real jewel of the show.

Allister did an equally spectacular job on NosillaCast #573. I’d heard about BitTorrent Sync and it sounded intriguing but before hearing his eloquent description of the problem to be solved, I didn’t see how I could use it in my own world. Now I think I will give it a whirl. Dorothy came through like a champ with her review of the game Enigma, and I loved it when she talked about how much she hates anything social. You could just tell that she washed her mouth out with soap after even uttering the word Facebook.

I was inspired by Allister’s sequel to my “I Made Fire” discussion, and started imagining the things I haven’t tried and I bet I really could do when I get my nerve up. When he talked about the early days of programming with his dad, I recalled the time my dad took me into his office when I was around 11 (so that would be 1969 if my arithmetic is correct) and showed me how he could program an HP Pen drafting machine to draw a T on the paper. It was something I’ll never forget. I loved hearing about the scale too from Beurer – I’m a fan of weighing myself, not that it makes any difference on how much I weigh but because I just love metrics! Might need to get me one of those too.

I really enjoyed Allister’s interview of Julie Kuehl about how WordPress has changed her life. Julie is what Steve likes to call “good people”. I’m happy that she found the WordPress community and that she shared it with us. Really made me think maybe I should attend one of these WordCamps. I’ve really just touched the surface myself, but her description of how friendly and welcoming everyone was really struck a chord with me. I know what she’s talking about that some communities are not so welcoming so that was refreshing. I’m so happy she spent the time to tell us about it, and Allister did a great job throwing her questions and letting her run with it.

Thank you so much to Allister and Bart for their amazing contributions, keeping our long-running streak going of no missed shows for more than a decade!

Chit Chat Across the Pond

In this week’s episode of Chit Chat Across the Pond, we’re joined by Devin King, who I met through a local user group. We talk about what drove him to abandon the DSLR form factor and go to mirrorless cameras, and why he bought two of them, and the differences between them. We talk about applications for processing photos from Apple Photos to Lightroom and a whole lot of other editors. Be sure to subscribe separately to Chit Chat Across the Pond in your favorite podcatcher.
