I first got the H4. I love the fact it has XLR inputs and can be used as an analog-to-digital interface to your Mac as well. The H2 came into the picture right before I was supposed to launch my cross-country podcast tour, knowing that I will need more than one portable digital recorder. I thought the H2 would be a good option for this purpose. Unfortunately, when the company sponsoring the tour imploded, so did the tour. So while the H4 is still great, it does do multi-track recording (though I haven't really had a use for this feature yet the it works in this recorder), the XLR inputs (which I have used and work well), the H2 has the benefit of being more portable (smaller) so it's easier to just stick in a pocket. It can record both front and rear audio, and the UI is a bit more intuitive I think. The other added benefit of the H2 is when you interviewing someone who may be a bit nervous it looks a little more friendlier than the H4 which could be mistaken as a taser (I sometimes worried it would raise suspicion at airport security).

A couple years ago, I made the mistake of not switching the H4 audio inputs from the built in mic to the XLR cables, luckily I was still able to save the audio, but I wish it had an option of auto sensing when you plug in an XLR mic, that is the source you want to use. With the H2, you just need to be concerned about if you are using front, rear, or both mics and of course audio levels.

So I have found myself just using the H2 for my main portable digital recorder and use the H4 when I know I will need to use the XLR inputs. For major events which I will be recording at, I usually bring both (sometimes it doesn't hurt to have a back-up recording for another device just in case).

Cheers,
Louis

Interesting Louis - I've always had an H4 envy, so why do you find the H2 more useful?

What a fantastic interview. Kudos to both Allison and Rod.

Even though I love the Zoom H4, I find myself using the H2 far more these days. It lends itself well for occasions of this kind.

Cheers,
