Sunday, September 21st, 2008

iMovie ‘08 rant, delete applications using AppDelete, ScreenSteps from screensteps.com saves my bacon on a test. Debbie T of Splashofstyle.com helps me add Subscribe to Comments to the blog. Donald Burr of otakunopodcast.com and voicesoferinn.com does a review of Minefield from beatnikpad.com. Videocue Pro review in a VIDEO over at podfeet.com. Interview with Alex Perry and his trials as a “regular guy” with Windows Vista. In Chit Chat Across the Pond Bart & I argue about whether Brussel Sprouts or Broccoli tastes worse, how donald and Ivan solved Lindsay’s upload video from iPhoto problem, we go through a couple of security issues, argue about apple’s iPhone SDK, and we wind up with Bart’s interesting solution to how to boot a mac from a DVD if the internal optical drive on said mac eats cd’s.

#169 Aperture, iChat screensharing, VirtualBox, Growl annoyances

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Kyle fixes his first flat tire, Pat Dengler from onepluszero.com replaces my hard drive and in Dumb Question Corner we figure out how to get rid of autofilled email addresses in Mail. Andy McCaskey of sdrnews.com gives a spontaneous review of ScreenSteps and Matt Brown gives us a review of Aperture. I interview Kelly about helping her mom using iChat screensharing, and Donald Burr of otakunopodcast.com and voicesoferinn.com reviews VirtualBox from virtualbox.org. In Chit Chat Across the Pond Bart and I do sort of a hodgepodge episode. First we discuss the virtues and dangers of Growl from growl.info then I go on yet another rant about iPhoto, and finally Bart winds it up with a rant about how Evernote.

#168 Chrome, Cooliris, G9, Snapshots conquered, LaTeX

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

A REALLY long show: Al’s going to Demo, funnest TCP/IP argument ever including Chuck Mott of NAT fame (man pages at developer.apple.com.). Google Chrome first look vs. IE 8 (link to a Chrome features site). Cooliris Previews vs. Piclens confusion & praise (cooliris.com). Another reason Bart is wrong about iChat, and Al is on Ladies night on TMUP at typicalmacuser.com. In Dumb Question Corner we help Peter make a smart folder in iPhoto to see just his video files, and we don’t answer Jude’s question about how to get num-lock to work on the extended Apple keyboard with a MacBook Pro. Donald Burr reviews the Canon PowerShot G9, check out the dpreview at dpreview.com 9 and his podcasts at otakunopodcast.com and voicesoferinn.com. Jane from galacticstrings.com explains how to get rid of snapshots on your website. In Chit Chat Across the Pond Bart tells us about LaTex, link to a wiki all about LaTeX: en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX and Bart’s new web address is bartb.ie/blog.

PoP #10 Recording a Skype Conversation

Monday, September 1st, 2008

One of the easiest ways to do interviews, or to have a co-host for your audio podcast is to call the other person on Skype, and then record the audio coming out of Skype along with your own microphone input. I’ll demonstrate how to do this using WireTap Studio. Skype is a free application and service that allows you to make computer to computer calls for free, or from a computer to a regular telephone for a very small fee.

#167 Piclens, spoofing MAC Addresses, MindNode, iPhone Scrabble - Shazam - Midomi

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Please refer to me now as Little Mrs. Podcastenstein. Connor sets me straight on how MobileMe DOES still have the beautiful galleries. Three reviews from first time reviewers: Megan (Not Nurse Rached) reviews Piclens, aka CoolIris at cooliris.com/ and her blog is at notratched.wordpress.com. Rod tells us how to spoof a MAC address, and William tells us about Scrabble for the iPhone. Elliott comes back for a review of Midomi and Shazam for the iPhone - check out his YouTube videos at ElliottMediaGroup videos. Get 25% off on ScreenSteps by putting in the coupon code NOSILLA at screensteps.com. Freeware MindNode for creating mind maps on Mac OSX at mindnode.com as compared to the open source FreeMind from freemind.sourceforge.net. Links to the output from MindNode in rtf, an html, an opml, and a pdf. In Chit Chat Across the Pond Bart and I drop the serious security talk and argue about whether the latest Indiana Jones movie was any good and then we turn back to technology with a discussion of why Bart thinks iChat is junk (he’s wrong) and why Adium is marvelous (he’s right). Email me at nosillacast@gmail.com, and be sure to check out the live show recording at ~5pm GMT-8 at ustream.tv/channel/nosillacast-mac-podcast. Except not next Sunday, I’ll be at Demo!

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Recording from the Admiral’s Club while stuck at the airport. In Dumb Question Corner we get answers to the nagging question of whether it matters to have your headphones in the right ears. Rundown of my favorite photo sharing options, including jAlbum, Picasa Web Albums, Facebook, and not using Flickr or MobileMe. Willie tells us 238 other ways to delete podcasts in iTunes, and Michelle tells us about a great new Adobe Air application called Social Addict from twistermc.com. Jane and Rose tee off with Chit Chat Across the Nullarbor, and in Chit Chat Across the Pond Bart and I discuss how MobileMe is running in clear text and letting your information float freely about the interweb.

#164 HP Mini-Note, MacAlly Shell, DNS Poisoning

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

My adventures helping my friends buy two MacBooks, in Dumb Question Corner we learn how to delete old podcasts, the meaning of the word shenanigans, and how to combine PDFs using Preview. Rose teaches how to take a screen capture on the iPhone and how to use MobileMe on IE6. I review the HP Mini-Note 2133, model KX868AT. More than you’d ever want to know about cables at Gizmodo.com, and how the MacAlly Protection Shell for MacBook saved George’s MacBook from his cat. In Chit Chat Across the Pond we discuss the DNS poisoning problem a little bit more, then we debate whether Apple should cut apps from the app store on their whim, and we talk about Bart’s first time on the Mac Roundtable.
