Listen to the Podcast Once (58 min)

Today is Sunday April 5th, 2009, and this is show number 198. Only two more shows till #200! It appears that Steve is cooking up something for show number 200, chat with him on twitter at twitter.com/spsheridan if you want to get involved!

Easy Wi-fi for AT&T update
Last week on the show I talked about a sweet iPhone application that removes all the drudgery out of connecting into the AT&T wireless network at Starbucks for free. I know, how spoiled am I? Well I told you it was free, but Reza left a comment on the blog. Here's what they said, "Easy Wifi for AT&T is now $0.99. You’re show does make a difference." Oh man, that's not what I wanted to see happen! Oh well, I would totally pay a buck for that application!

Backups Backups Backups
Ok, this is all Bart's fault, just so you know. He started it with all that "your backups to DVD aren't any good you know crud." So I had to find a better backup strategy for my home movies, which I did with DVD Imager. I know, I already told you all about that. But now that I had a tool to make disk images of my home made DVDs, now I needed a place to put them. Good news, I had salvaged a drive from an old enclosure that was irritating me (the power cable kept falling out in the middle of file transfers). I also had another drive from an enclosure that had actually failed but the drive was fine. So I'm good - I have two drives, just gotta pick up an enclosure or two.

Office Depot is close by, and I know it's not your tech mecca or anything, but I had to be a little bit surprised when the guy helping me there did not know what an enclosure WAS, much less be able to find one. I decided to make the longer trek to Best Buy and while their supply was limited and they were overpriced, they did have a couple of enclosures and I wanted to stop procrastinating so I bought a really cool one called the RocketFish. It's a flaming red with fins on it! I think I paid around $60 for it but amazon has it for only $22. I like to support local brick and mortar stores but man, triple the price for instant gratification?

Ok, so NOW I should be able to start the great backup adventure of 2009, right? Nope, I've still got one more bare drive, so I decided to go with monoprice.com to get a killer deal on an enclosure. They're rock bottom prices on cables, thought they might have a good deal. I found an IDE enclosure for only $14! w00t! Ordered that bad boy, got it in, and then realized that my last drive is a SATA drive! For those of you not versed in boring connector technology, older drives used these really thick, practically inflexible flat ribbon cables with this really annoying wide connector that hurt your little fingers to pull in and out. A few years back they started using SATA connectors, or Serial ATA. IDE is the same as PATA, which stands for Parallel ATA which is also referred to as plain old ATA. With me here? PATA=ATA=IDE=big annoying cable and connector. SATA is faster, thinner and easier to work with.

So after that technical sidetrack, the bottom line was that my salvaged drive wouldn't work in the $14 IDE enclosure. So back over to Best Buy where I discovered it's really hard to find an IDE drive these days. Sigh. So I overpaid, I think it was $80 for a 500GB IDE drive.</itunes:summary>

DVDpedia from bruji.com/dvdpedia goes up against Delicious Library and wins for only $18 from bruji.com/dvdpedia. Then Bart and I discuss how to get offsite backups without taking forever but still being secure, and he walks me through how to make an encrypted disk image to protect my offsite backup. I created a ScreenSteps tutorial on podfeet.com in the right sidebar on how to make an encrypted disk image too.

Listen to the Podcast Once (52 min)

Today is Sunday March 15th, 2009, and this is show number 195. Do you realize we're getting pretty darn close to 200 episodes? What shall we do to celebrate? You guys are ever so much more clever than I am, think up something that requires no work on my part, ok? It seems like we should be able to pull something off here!

Slau
At the podcast expo a few years back I had the great pleasure of getting to know Slau. It was one of the high points of the show for me, and I didn't even realize at the time that he was the one who wrote the fantastic podsafe Christmas carol "If Every Day Were Christmas" over at podsafeforpeace.org. Anyway, Slau has a recording studio and has been promising to do a podcast for ages, and he's finally done it. I listened to the episode where he works with Jordan Potter and Matthew Conrad and I was entranced. He mixes in the music he's recording with his behind the scenes description of what goes into recording a record. He's so gifted at story telling, it's fantastic. I know, you're all thinking "but Allison doesn't even LIKE music". You got me there - but consider if I liked it, it must be REALLY good! Check it out at sessionswithslau.com

Spotlight Laser-specific Search
Hi, Allison, it's Kate from SouthEastern Michigan again - great answer the last time - even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear, c'est la vie.

Here's another - Apple's Quick Tip of the week (on "Advanced Find") said in rss:
"Mac OS X Leopard has a great search tool. Accessible in the menu bar or from any Finder window, Spotlight lets you search any Mac on your network, perform calculations, look up definitions, launch applications, search recently visited websites, and much more. Using Spotlight, you can also define laser-specific search criteria simply by pointing and clicking." apple.com

Well, their video didn't address _any_ of those items their blurb referred to - so - how do I search any Mac in my network? (I can calculate, define, and launch already) - and what do you think "Using Spotlight, you can also define laser-specific search criteria simply by pointing and clicking" means? Doesn't that sound like fun?

You know I love your show although Bart's "Security Life" bits give me the heebie-jeebies. And tell Honda-Bob I wish I had a Honda and lived in Orange county!

I think you'll like the answer better this time. you're absolutely right - that laser focus thing always gets me excited! I did a couple of searches and found a link on Life Hacker to usingmac.com where they actually explain how to get that laser search!

the basic idea is that you type in your search term followed by "kind:" and the kind of thing you're looking for. I typed in "podcast kind: text" and it found a whole bunch of text documents with the word podcast imbedded in them - in 1/10th the time that Windows would never even find the word podcast if it were the name of my hard drive! How about after Spotlight finds a file, what if you just want to see where it is, not open it? turns out hitting command-return will show you the file in the finder.</itunes:summary>
