You can get ClamXav from the Mac App Store http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/clamxav/id430207028?mt=12 which helps you to keep it up to date, or you can download it directly from their Web site at http://www.clamxav.com/. These instructions assume you’re running Snow Leopard or Lion, if you’re running a previous version some features need to be enabled, see the instructions here: http://www.clamxav.com/docs_menu.php. After installation, log out of your Mac and back in.
Starting Up
When you first launch ClamXav it’s a good idea to update the Virus Definitions. Next let’s set some preferences.
General Preferences
- You can set these as you desire, especially the audible alerts, but I recommend ensuring the box is checked to scan email, update virus definitions on launch and check for updates to the application itself on launch.
- Click on the Sentry tab
Sentry
Sentry keeps an eye on any folder you choose. We’re going to set it to watch your downloads folder.
Drag Downloads Into the Window
The Downloads Folder Will Now be Monitored
Schedule
It’s a good idea to allow virus definitions to be updated daily so set the pulldown to a time you’re sure your machine will be on. Now simply let ClamXav run and hope you never hear back from it!
Scan On Demand
ClamXav also installs a Service that lets you scan a file or folder at any time. simply right click on the file or folder you want to scan, pull down to Services, and choose Scan with ClamXav. The application will run and show you the results of the scan.
