WordPress.com has a Gallery function that works reasonably well, but it’s not obvious how to add images to an existing gallery. I also like to have posts for each image that will be shown when Categories or Tags are selected from my home Gallery page. These instructions tell you how to do both. If you don’t already have a gallery and are looking for the beginning instructions, please refer to the wordpress.com instructions at http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/
Part 1 – Uploading the Images and Attaching to the Gallery
Media –> Add New
Select files
Choose Select Files
Choose Your File(s)
You can select one or more files, and then click Open
Navigate Back to the Library
Media –> Library
Choose Unattached
At this point your image is in WordPress but it isn’t attached to the gallery. We have to find it in the Unattached images.
Attach to a Post
Click on the check boxes next to your images, and then click on Bulk Actions to pull down to Attach to a Post. Then click Apply.
Find the Page (or Post) Where You Have your [Gallery] Tag
The name of my Page where my gallery lives is called Gallery. Enter the name of the Page and click Search, and then click on the right Page in the list (only one showing here but it still must be clicked) and then click Select. If your gallery is in a Post, be sure to click Post sat the top instead of Pages.
Part 2 – Creating an Individual Post for the Image
So far we’ve uploaded the images, and we’ve attached them to the gallery so they’ll show there, but we also want to have individual posts for each image so we can have them show when people click the Categories or Tags.
Create the Posts
Posts –> Add New
Insert Image
Click the Insert Image button in the menu bar above where you write the Post.
Choose Media Library
Since we have already uploaded the image we want to go find it in the Media Library
Show the Image
In order to insert it in the post we must first show it.
Enter Alt Tags and Insert into Post
If you upload images one at a time you’ll be given the option to add the Alt Tag (so screen readers can notify the blind of what’s in the image) but if you upload a pile of them you might have skipped that step (like I did). Insert into Post to complete the Process.
Name & Tag Your Post
1 – Name your post,
2 – Select the appropriate Categories
3 – Enter appropriate Tags
4 – Click Add to add the tags
5 – Click on Publish.
You’re done! Now you should have a gallery showing on your Post or Page, and you should have individual posts for each image that will show when the associated categories or tags are selected.
