NC #669 CloudMounter, Mesh vs Regular Router Flyoff, PLEX, Security Bits

Steve and I are off to Paris for a couple of weeks, so be sure to send your audio reviews to Bart to help him out doing the show (Allister has his already in the can). We won’t have a live show for the next two weeks – will miss you! In this episode, I tell you about how CloudMounter might solve your cloud storage problems. Then I’ll tell you the results of my scientific testing of a traditional Netgear router against their cloud router, the Orbi (you might be surprised at the results). Then we’ll talk to PLEX at CES. Finally, we have Bart Busschots on with Security Bits where he’ll tell us about the US Customs epic security fail, answer the question of whether Cellibrite can actually unlock any iPhone and of course other notable security news.

NC #667 August Smart Lock, LIZN Hearpieces, Focos, Wagz Smart Collar, MirraViz, GE Connected Lighting, Security Bits

It’s another action-packed episode this week. I’ll start by telling you about the August Smart Lock Pro and how Steve and I got prepared psychologically for such a scary idea. Then we’ll hear a CES interview about the LIZN Wireless Hearpieces, Bluetooth headphones that could improve your hearing. Then we’ll head back to CES to hear about the Wagz Smart Pet Collar. If you’ve ever wanted to sit with someone but watch something completely different from them on TV, you’ll be interested in our CES interview about the MirraViz Multiview Displays. Everything has to be smart these days, and GE tells us how their Connected Lighting products fulfill that dream. As if that wasn’t enough goodness, we have Bart back with another great Security Bits segment.

We’ll start with part 2 of my year in review of the apps and hardware I’ve talked about in 2017 and I’ll let you know whether I’m still using them. After that, we’ll be joined by Caleb Fong with a couple of Tiny Tip segments on tools for programming. Then Denise Crown will give us a shootout on US streaming service she’s been testing to see if she can cut the cord. Then I’ll wind up the show with a story of missing menus for my father-in-law and how the NosillaCastaways, the Mac Geek Gab listeners and of course Bart helped me solve the problem.

NC #656 Chapter Markers x 3, Apple Store Phone Scam, Craig Federighi Answers Steve, Hazel to Yoink, Regex Tools, CardHop

In this action-packed show I tell you the story of adding chapter markers to the NosillaCast in a three part continuation series (hopefully you can see them now?) interspersed with two reviews from Bart. He tells us about how he’s using Hazel now to send things to Yoink and he explains why CardHop makes Contacts useful again. Steve wrote to Craig Federighi and actually got a response and 30 seconds of fame on Apple sites. And we’ve got a PSA about a phone scam using an Apple Store’s real phone number.

Animoji Karaoke – To Boldly Go…

Harry McCracken, the technology director at Fast Company has invented something super fun, which he has named, “Animoji Karaoke”. It’s a very silly idea and a bit tricky to execute. Using an iPhone X in Messages, you can create an animated emoji, or Animoji, but you can only record 10 seconds. The trick he figured out was to use the iPhone’s built-in screen recorder to record Messages instead. That means you then have to open in an editor (I used ScreenFlow) to crop to just the Animoji. But to make it Karaoke, you have to lip-synch to some audio and bring that audio into the video. I thought you guys might get a kick out of my attempt at Animoji Karaoke!

Using a Screen Reader? click here (spoiler, the video is an alien)

NC #642 B2 Storage from Backblaze, Capturing a Total Eclipse, iPhone Forerunners, Parallels Toolbox

In what can only be considered prescient, Allister Jenks has a review of Backblaze’s B2 log-term storage solutions right as CrashPlan bails on home customers. I’ll walk you through how Steve managed to capture video and create an awesome photo of the total solar eclipse, while still enjoying the experience with minimal camera fiddling. Ryan Winkler joins us for the first time about two products I’ve recommended, Webcam Settings and the ATR2100 microphone. Allister comes back in with a talk on the Forerunners of the iPhone. Then I do an extensive review of all of the tools in the fantastic Parallels Toolbox.
