These instructions will show you how to do unhide the User Library folder on the external drive or even on a second Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Credit goes to Steve Davidson for teaching me how to do this.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"screensteps-step\">\n<h4>Let&#8217;s Start with a Remote Mac Because the Syntax is Simpler<\/h4>\n<div class=\"instructions\">\n<p>On the remote Mac, enable Remote Login (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/how-to-set-up-a-mac-for-remote-login\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/how-to-set-up-a-mac-for-remote-login\/<\/a>) and use the ssh command to Secure Shell into the remote Mac. As you can see I have a backup of my home (allison) directory but I can&#8217;t see the Library folder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"screensteps-media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.screensteps.me\/nosillacast\/7zeagw\/next-let-s-repeat-this-on-an-external-volume.png?1384369582\" alt=\"Next Let's Repeat This On An External Volume\" width=\"653\" height=\"340\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"screensteps-step\">\n<h4>Repeat the chflags Command<\/h4>\n<div class=\"instructions\">\n<p>In this case we have the same command but we have to navigate first to Volumes, then to the specific backup drive name (with those annoying spaces replaced with \\ and space) and then to the user directory and then Library.<\/p>\n<pre>chflags nohidden \/Volumes\/Core\\ i7\\ backup\\ 2011\\ 03\\ 03\/allison\/Library<\/pre>\n<p>To be honest it might be easier to change the name of the volume not to have spaces than it is to type it this way!<\/p>\n<p>Or you could use quotes like this:<\/p>\n<pre>chflags nohidden \/Volumes\/'Core i7 backup 2011 03 03'\/allison\/Library<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"screensteps-media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.screensteps.me\/nosillacast\/7zeagw\/repeat-the-chflags-command.png?1384369583\" alt=\"Repeat the chflags Command\" width=\"584\" height=\"380\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"screensteps-step\">\n<h4>Now Your Library is Visible on Your Backup Volume<\/h4>\n<div class=\"instructions\">\n<p>Important note &#8211; you only have to do this one time, every time you connect your external drive the Library will be visible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"screensteps-media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.screensteps.me\/nosillacast\/7zeagw\/now-your-library-is-visible-on-your-backup-volume.png?1384369584\" alt=\"Now Your Library is Visible on Your Backup Volume\" width=\"650\" height=\"354\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problem to be Solved You&#8217;ve got a great backup of your OSX computer, and you need to get something back from the Library folder, say something in the Application Support subfolder.
