Under normal use at home I never go over my 4GB plan (not even close) but about 2 days into a vacation I get a 75% usage warning. I had Katie Floyd of the <a href=\"http:\/\/macpowerusers.com\" target=\"_blank\">Mac Power Users Podcast<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/448-wemo-switch-nest-protect-auria-le-data-hogs\/\" target=\"_blank\">NosillaCast Episode #448<\/a> to help me figure out the root causes and how to control my usage on travel. &nbsp;These instructions are the checklist she helped me create to best manage my data. Your mileage my vary but I&#8217;m betting at least some of these ideas will help you too.<\/p>\n<p>I updated this checklist in August 2015 to include new items that run automatically that could be the cause of significant data usage. In this post I recommend a tool called TripMode from <a href=\"http:\/\/tripmode.ch\" target=\"_blank\">tripmode.ch<\/a> to monitor and limit network access by application: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/tripmode\/\" target=\"_blank\">Can TripMode Demystify My Massive Network Data Usage?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"clarify-article-content\">\n<div class=\"clarify-steps-container\">\n<div id=\"clarify-step-12\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h3 class=\"clarify-step-title\">1. Photostream<\/h3>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Photos appear to be a big source of my data usage. &nbsp;Here&#8217;s the steps for the older Aperture and iPhoto applications followed by the instructions to disable automatic photo uploads using the newer Photos application<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-sub-steps-container\">\n<div id=\"clarify-step-1\" class=\"clarify-sub-step-container\">\n<h4 class=\"clarify-step-title\">1.1 Aperture (iPhoto) &#8211; Turn off Automatic Connection to Photostream<\/h4>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Aperture &#8211;&gt; Preferences<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/aperture-iphoto-turn-off-automatic-connection-to-photostream.png\" width=\"302\" height=\"150\" class=\"clarify-step-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-2\" class=\"clarify-sub-step-container\">\n<h4 class=\"clarify-step-title\">1.2 Aperture Uncheck Both Automatic Settings<\/h4>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>The first will import photos uploaded from my iPhone (which we&#8217;re not changing) and the second will cause upload of photos taken on my DSLR (in RAW!) and loaded into Aperture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/aperture-uncheck-both-automatic-settings.png\" width=\"525\" height=\"327\" class=\"clarify-step-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-25\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h3 class=\"clarify-step-title\">2. Photos &#8211; Pause iCloud Photo Library<\/h3>\n<div class=\"clarify-sub-steps-container\">\n<div id=\"clarify-step-22\" class=\"clarify-sub-step-container\">\n<h4 class=\"clarify-step-title\">2.1 Open Photos Preferences&#8230;<\/h4>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/open-photos-preferences.png\" width=\"265\" height=\"241\" class=\"clarify-step-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-23\" class=\"clarify-sub-step-container\">\n<h4 class=\"clarify-step-title\">2.2 Pause for one day<\/h4>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>When I look at this the next day, it still says paused, so I think &quot;one day&quot; actually means &quot;until I uncheck this&quot;. &nbsp;I&#8217;m not 100% sure of this so do check it daily.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pause-for-one-day.png\" width=\"532\" height=\"493\" class=\"clarify-step-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-3\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h3 class=\"clarify-step-title\">3. Disconnect iOS Devices from the Mifi<\/h3>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>iOS Devices are often set to consume more data when on wifi (don&#8217;t download podcasts except on wifi for example) so they need to forget the Mifi network or they&#8217;ll chew up the data. &nbsp;Go to Settings, Wi-Fi, Select the Mifi (in my example it&#8217;s called Red Dart) and click on Forget this Network.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/disconnect-ios-devices-from-the-mifi.png\" width=\"504\" height=\"267\" class=\"clarify-step-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-4\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h3 class=\"clarify-step-title\">4. Turn Off Cellular Data By App on iOS<\/h3>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>On iOS go into Settings, Cellular Data and by app you can disable cellular data. &nbsp;Katie suggested at a minimum shutting off:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>App Store (with automatic updates this can chew up a lot of data)<\/li>\n<li>FaceBook (which is NOTORIOUS for chewing up data by checking constantly in the background)<\/li>\n<li>Podcast apps, magazines, file storage apps like Dropbox &#8211; even if they have internal controls this is a good precaution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that while you have these set for no cellular data, iOS will constantly nag you about it whenever you open one of these apps!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/turn-off-cellular-data-by-app-on-ios.png\" width=\"504\" height=\"442\" class=\"clarify-step-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-13\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h3 class=\"clarify-step-title\">5. Disable Online Backups<\/h3>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Offsite backups are so easy these days and a great way to protect your data, but you might not want to chew up your data plan running those backups while on travel. &nbsp;This is a risky maneuver because of course this means you&#8217;re not running your offsite backups. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-sub-steps-container\">\n<div id=\"clarify-step-5\" class=\"clarify-sub-step-container\">\n<h4 class=\"clarify-step-title\">5.1 Disable Online Backup Services by Network<\/h4>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Katie and Allison both use CrashPlan, but something similar should exist in your online backup solution.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click on Settings<\/li>\n<li>Click on the Network tab<\/li>\n<li>Click on Configure&#8230; next to Wireless Networks<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/wpid5382-disable-online-backup-services-by-network.png\" width=\"771\" height=\"603\" class=\"clarify-step-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-6\" class=\"clarify-sub-step-container\">\n<h4 class=\"clarify-step-title\">5.2 Disable Mifi Wireless Network<\/h4>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Uncheck the box next to the network you don&#8217;t want to waste while on travel. In my case the Mifi is named Red Dart so I have it permanently unchecked.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to realize that I&#8217;ve now disabled iCloud syncing of my precious travel photos AND my online backup service, so I&#8217;d better not delete them from my memory cards or do a manual backup to some other device while on travel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/disable-mifi-wireless-network.png\" width=\"554\" height=\"376\" class=\"clarify-step-image\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-14\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h3 class=\"clarify-step-title\">6. Initiate More Warnings On Your Wireless Account<\/h3>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Allison mentioned that the first warning of a problem is when she&#8217;s chewed through 75% of her shared data plan. Katie said that you can modify your profile on your service provider&#8217;s site to give you warnings at earlier intervals.
