Today is Sunday, September 10, 2017, and this is show number 644. Well, we’re just two days away from the big announcement from Apple. Remember if you want to join your fellow NosillaCastaways in a chat room during the announcement, head over to podfeet.com/live and join in the fun. Reminder that I will not be on video, because we’ll all be watching Apple, right? If you haven’t been in the live chat before, this is a great time to try it out, and it’s actually a reasonable hour for our European and more eastern nations. There are instructions over at podfeet.com/live so I hope you’ll come join us!

Chit Chat Across the Pond

In Chit Chat Across the Pond this week I invited Joe Dugandzic back to the show to talk us through his new Illustrated HomeKit Product Guide. It’s great fun as always to talk to Joe as he explains what kind of products are available now for HomeKit from lighting, outlets and sockets, wall dimmers & switches, security devices like locks and cameras, thermostats, ceiling fans and shades, fire and smoke detectors, specialized sensors like for air quality and water leaks, and even smart buttons (which I think are dumb actually). Check it out in either Chit Chat Across the Pond Lite or the full Chit Chat Across the Pond feed in your podcatcher of choice.

Blog Posts

Allister’s Journey from Castblaster to MiX16 Pro

Snapchat Spectacles by Denise

Patreon and Amazon

Right about this time in the show I usually talk to you about ways you can support the show, like contributing to the Podfeet Patreon or using my Amazon Affiliate Links. But this week I’d like to suggest you contribute to Bart’s Patreon. Bart does two great podcasts over at lets-talk.ie. There’s Let’s Talk Apple which is a monthly analysis of the month’s news with a rotating panel of interesting guests. Let’s Talk Photography is also monthly and it’s about the art of photography. It’s not about gear, but about how to create great photographs. Bart does these shows and creates the amazing tutorials for Programming By Stealth, and creates the bi-monthly Security Bits, all for the love of the subjects. But hosting his shows does cost money so he has a Patreon to offset those costs. if you listen to his shows or if you only listen to him here on the Podfeet Podcasts, I’d like you to consider going to patreon.com/ltpod (link in the shownotes) and help support him in all that he does.

Strategies to Introduce Someone to a Smart Phone

Joop on his backup strategy

Joop from the Netherlands wrote in after hearing Bart and I talking recently about backups. He shared his backup strategy with us and it was so interesting, I punished him by asking him to make a recording for you. Anyway, let’s hear what he has to say.

Hi Allison & Bart

I just finished listening to the latest NosillaCast, fun and informative as ever.

One of the things mentioned was the need for backups, and I do soooooo fully agree. And I thought why not share my setup, maybe relevant, or not, up to you.

As a mainly apple user (and linux) my setup is as follows.

I have an Apple Time Capsule (3TB) and a Synology 1515+ NAS with (20TB).
My Macs use Time Machine for their backup and they are all setup to rotate between both storage devices. So 1 hour the backup goes to the Time Capsule, the next hour it goes to the Synology, and so on.

My linux box backups once a day, both to the Synology and the Time Capsule.

Then on my Synology, I have configured Amazon glacier, and once a day the backup folder on the Synology is then transferred to one of Amazon’s glacier storage centers. (I just got this months bill and it was a whopping EUR 3.89 for a little shy of 500GB of backups.)

And twice a year ( I even have reminders setup for this :)). I fully restore one of my macs from the backups, usually in the spring I restore from a local backup and in the autumn (well just about now) I restore a glacier backup first and then do a full mac restore.

Maybe it’s all a bit over done, but with 30+ year of working in IT I know what it means to lose data, and like they say, it’s not going to happen on my shift.

This is fantastic, and something I’ll aspire to but I’m not sure I’ll get that far along. Learning how he uses Amazon Glacier right after learning about B2 from Backblaze from Allister I’m really going to start thinking about what stuff I can put offsite that I never thought I could afford to do before. Thanks Joop for the great ideas!

Teampaper Snap for Screenshots, Annotations and Collaboration

That’s going to wind this up for this week.
