He and his wife also bought a vacation home in the far Northeast corner of the state of Washington where there\u2019s very little infrastructure and not even reliable cell service.  He needed to find service that would meet his tech geek needs.<\/p>\n<p>In this episode of Chit Chat Across the Pond, Mark tells us about his experience with DSL service, and T-Mobile for home Internet, and why that lead him to pursue SpaceX\u2019s new Starlink satellite service. He explains the process of acquisition, costs, installation, and the speeds he\u2019s getting in his homes.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink is hot in the news right now, especially with their recent announcement that they\u2019ll be providing this service to the recreational vehicle (RV) community.<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-26471-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/media.blubrry.com\/nosillacast\/traffic.libsyn.com\/nosillacast\/CCATP_2022_07_11.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/media.blubrry.com\/nosillacast\/traffic.libsyn.com\/nosillacast\/CCATP_2022_07_11.mp3\">https:\/\/media.blubrry.com\/nosillacast\/traffic.libsyn.com\/nosillacast\/CCATP_2022_07_11.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><a title=\"mp3 download\" href=\"https:\/\/media.blubrry.com\/nosillacast\/traffic.libsyn.com\/nosillacast\/CCATP_2022_07_11.mp3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mp3 download<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Outline of our discussion:<\/p>\n<p>Options he found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DSL at his main house was ~12mbps<\/li>\n<li>T-Mobile worked for a while but became very unstable<\/li>\n<li>At his vacation home, DSL was closer to dialup speed<\/li>\n<li>Legacy satellite systems were very expensive with strict data limits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Starlink Experience<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Much faster than the other options available to him\n<ul>\n<li>HughesNet is 25mbps down with 50GB cap<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Averaging 150mpbs down and 15 up<\/li>\n<li>Also more reliable than the other alternatives<\/li>\n<li>Latency\n<ul>\n<li>Mark doesn\u2019t notice any issues (but he\u2019s not a gamer) and the latency is going down<\/li>\n<li>Legacy satellite service averages 700ms latency<\/li>\n<li>Starlink is 40ms because the satellites are in a low-earth orbit<\/li>\n<li>For reference, fiber is around 3ms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Starlink satellite doesn\u2019t provide a proper IP so he can\u2019t easily log into his system while away from home<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/satellitemap.space\/\">Live Starlink Satellite Map<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Process to get Starlink<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Input your address to see if service is available<\/li>\n<li>Deposit if not immediately available (I waited 7 months for first unit)<\/li>\n<li>Buy equipment when it becomes available<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTricks\u201d to getting it when it\u2019s not really your turn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Equipment<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u201cdish\u201d (first were round, about 24\u201d, now rectangular)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cModem\u201d can be used to broadcast wifi<\/li>\n<li>Now, ethernet adapter so you can use your own router<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hot Cats<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The dish heats itself to melt snow (avoid interference).
