We don\u2019t buy cell phones that happen to have cameras. We buy cameras that happen to come on cell phones. In my personal observation, the biggest driver on why people buy a new phone is whether the cameras are better than the model they currently own.<\/p>\n<p>The iPhone 14 Pro has 3 lenses on the back, just like the iPhone 13 Pro did, but it actually has 4 cameras. I\u2019m going to talk more about how that is done at a later date. Today I&#8217;d like to talk about how, in Apple Photos, it\u2019s much harder with the 14 Pro to figure out which camera you used to capture an image. If that\u2019s not at all important to you, then you can skip past this article, but if you\u2019d like to know more, stick with me.<\/p>\n<p>The iPhone 13 Pro had three cameras. In the Camera app, they\u2019re labeled \u201c.5\u201d, \u201c1X\u201d, and \u201c3\u201d. I don\u2019t for the life of me know why only the 1X camera gets to have an X but the time to rant about that is in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The info pane in Apple Photos for both macOS and iOS reveals information about how the image was captured. This information is called the EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format) amongst camera nerds.<\/p>\n<p>For images taken with the iPhone 13 Pro&#8217;s \u201c.5\u201d camera, Apple will label this image with \u201cUltra Wide Camera\u201d. It will also tell you the focal length (13mm) and aperture size (f\/1.8). You don\u2019t have to worry your pretty little head about those numbers to know which camera took the photo because the image is clearly labeled as using the Ultra Wide Camera.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"float: center; margin: 10px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iPhone-13-Pro-Info-Ultra-Wide-Camera.png\" alt=\"IPhone 13 Pro Info Ultra Wide Camera\"  title=\"iPhone 13 Pro Info Ultra Wide Camera.png\" width=\"264 \" height=\"90\"><figcaption style=\"text-align:center\">iPhone 13 Pro Info Ultra Wide Camera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Likewise, an image taken with the iPhone 13 Pro&#8217;s 1X camera will be clearly labeled \u201cWide Camera\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"float: center; margin: 10px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iPhone-13-Pro-Info-Wide-Camera.png\" alt=\"IPhone 13 Pro Info Wide Camera\"  title=\"iPhone 13 Pro Info Wide Camera.png\" width=\"259 \" height=\"86\"><figcaption style=\"text-align:center\">iPhone 13 Pro Info Wide Camera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And finally, if you tap on \u201c3\u201d to take a photo with your iPhone 13 Pro, that image will be labeled \u201cTelephoto Camera\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"float: center; margin: 10px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/iPhone-13-Pro-Info-Telephoto-Camera.png\" alt=\"IPhone 13 Pro Info Telephoto Camera\"  title=\"iPhone 13 Pro Info Telephoto Camera.png\" width=\"264 \" height=\"88\"><figcaption style=\"text-align:center\">iPhone 13 Pro Info Telephoto Camera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All of that makes sense. I think even if we\u2019re not super nerds on this subject, we can tell which one of these images was created by pushing which button on our camera app. Now let&#8217;s switch gears to what happens with the iPhone 14 Pro&#8217;s cameras.<\/p>\n<p>On iPhone 14 Pro, the Camera app on iOS now gives us four options instead of three. They are \u201c.5\u201d, \u201c1X\u201d, \u201c2\u201d, and \u201c3\u201d. Again I\u2019m baffled why they don\u2019t give us an X on all four options or none. I&#8217;m going to have to get over that. But when you open the Info panel in Apple Photos, images taken by the four different cameras are all labeled with the same name: \u201cBack Triple Camera\u201d. <\/p>\n<figure style=\"float: center; margin: 10px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/All-Cameras-Report-as-Back-Triple-Camera.png\" alt=\"All Cameras Report as Back Triple Camera\"  title=\"All Cameras Report as Back Triple Camera.png\" width=\"263 \" height=\"362\"><figcaption style=\"text-align:center\">All Cameras Report as Back Triple Camera but Pay Attention to the Focal Length<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even though Apple doesn&#8217;t make it obvious to us, we can still figure out which camera took an image. Remember when I told you with the iPhone 13 Pro camera you didn\u2019t have to worry your pretty little head about those numbers for focal length and aperture? I\u2019m sad to say that we <em>will<\/em> have to worry our pretty little heads with the iPhone 14 Pro.<\/p>\n<p>The clue as to which camera took the photo is buried in the focal length, which does change depending on the camera. In order to learn which one is which, let\u2019s take a look at the information Apple gives us on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone-14-pro\/specs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iPhone 14 Pro Tech Specs page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"float: center; margin: 10px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Apple-Specs-on-4-Cameras-in-iPhone-14-Pro.png\" alt=\"Apple Specs on 4 Cameras in iPhone 14 Pro\"  title=\"Apple Specs on 4 Cameras in iPhone 14 Pro.png\" width=\"754 \" height=\"272\"><figcaption style=\"text-align:center\">Apple Specs on 4 Cameras in iPhone 14 Pro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I compiled them into a little table for reference along with a bit of other information. That\u2019s it; that\u2019s all you have to memorize. From there you can derive all of the others. The only thing that might throw you here is that the math is inexact. I\u2019ll explain as we go through them. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Ultra Wide camera says \u201c.5\u201d on it, so if you see a shot with roughly half of the 24mm of the Main camera, you know that\u2019s the Ultra Wide. Half of 24mm is 12mm, but the Info window will say 14mm, but that\u2019s close enough to be able to spot it.<\/li>\n<li>The 2X Telephoto camera says \u201c2\u201d in the Camera app. The Main Camera is 24mm, so doubling it gives you 48mm. Now you know that a 48mm image was taken by the 2X Telephoto.<\/li>\n<li>I bet you can figure out the 3X camera on your own. 3 x 24mm is 72mm, so if you see the 77mm focal length in the Info window, you know that\u2019s the 3X camera.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podfeet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Focal-Lengths-are-Printed-Under-the-Zoom-Levels.png\" alt=\"Focal Lengths are Printed Under the Zoom Levels\"  title=\"Focal Lengths are Printed Under the Zoom Levels.PNG\" width=\"400  \" height=\"265\"><figcaption style=\"text-align:center\">Focal Lengths are Printed Under the Zoom Levels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I wish the numbers were exact multipliers, but even Apple is inconsistent. In the Info window for an Ultra Wide image, it says 14mm, but if you look at Apple\u2019s tech spec page it says Ultra Wide is 13mm, and of course, the math says it should be 12mm. I guess math is really more of a guideline here.<\/p>\n<p>If you have trouble remembering the one number or calculating all of the others, your iPhone&#8217;s camera will actually tell you the numbers. If you tap and hold on any one of the options (.5, 1X, 2, or 3) you&#8217;ll get the little dial to change the zoom level. If you look very carefully, the focal lengths are actually printed right under the zoom levels.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s tiny print, so you might need to fetch your glasses or a teenager to read it to you, but it&#8217;s there. Oh, and to make it just a smidge more challenging, they only print 3 of the 4 at a time, one is always missing and it depends on how you rotate the dial to change which one is missing.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bottomline\">Bottom Line<\/h3>\n<p>The bottom line is that if you want to know which camera took a given photo, look in the info window for 24 mm. If you find it, that\u2019s the Main 1X camera. See roughly half of 24mm? That\u2019s the .5X Ultra Wide camera. See double 24mm? Then it was taken at 2X. See some number vaguely close to triple that? It\u2019s your 3X Telephoto Camera. I\u2019m sure glad I was able to clarify all of this for you, and here\u2019s hoping Apple puts the real names back in so no one has to do math to figure out which camera they used!!!<\/p>\n<p>I think there&#8217;s hope on that front because, in iOS 16, iPhone 14 Pro images in the Photos app clearly say &#8220;Telephoto Camera&#8221;, &#8220;Main Camera&#8221;, and &#8220;Ultra Wide Camera&#8221;. I verified that this clarity is not available on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Fingers crossed that macOS Ventura and iPadOS 16 bring it back to us.
