To do this, we needed to install a modern version of Ruby, install its Gem Bundler, create a little placeholder site, and then serve Jekyll to view our site locally. We pushed it to GitHub where the GitHub Actions we learned about last time do their magic and create a real website all for free. But we didn’t stop there. One of our goals is to create our own theme, and to build on what we get with Bootstrap. We actually download the source, not compiled version of Bootstrap and then pick and choose the files we want to use. While learning about the standard conventions for directory structure in Jekyll sites, we’ll also learn about Sass — Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets — and how Jekyll will turn them into standard CSS.

It’s a bit of a heavy lift in terms of a lot of moving pieces, but no one bit of this was hard to learn. It was great fun, and this is just the beginning of what we’re going to learn about using Jekyll as a fully-functional content management system.

You can find Bart’s fabulous tutorial shownotes and the audio podcast at pbs.bartificer.net.

Articles

CES 2025: Ecoflow Portable Power Stations

Focus Mode to Put “If found call:” on Your Lock Screen

CES 2025: Incase Laptop Sleeves, Backpacks, & Keyboards

WidgetSmith to Put “If found call:” on Your Lock Screen

CES 2025: Shiftcam Accessories for Mobile Phones

Support the Show

You know how sometimes you’re listening to a podcast, and you think, “Wow, I really learned something cool just now.” Or maybe, “That was a fascinating conversation.” Or even, “Wow, I bet it’s a lot of work to put together podcasts like this every single week!” In these moments you might be thinking that you should reward the podcaster for this hard work, but it feels like too much friction. What if you could just go to podfeet.com/donate and using Apple Pay buy me a coffee? or 3 or 5 or even more coffees? That’s what the delightful David Ragsdale did last week. Easy as anything, nearly zero friction and it made me feel like I had a pat on my little punkin’ head. Be delightful like David and go there now!

Security Bits — 2 March 2025

Transcript of NC_2025_03_02

That’s going to wind this up for this week.
