Update\/Corrections to Disk Sweeping Apps<\/h2>\n

Last week, I explained to you why I run multiple disk-sweeping apps in order to find the most disk space to recover. I didn’t have enough time to let each of the developers read what I was going to say before it hit the podcast, but after they did get a chance to read, they gave me some swell additions about their apps. In the original article, I’ve included them with the words “Breaking news!” I’d like to bring you up to date with all of the corrections and additions.<\/p>\n

BREAKING NEWS!<\/p>\n

After I posted this article, I got a lovely letter back from Disk Graph developer Nick Kick. Amongst many other topics, he pointed me to a menu option I hadn\u2019t noticed under View, that says Show List. With Show List checked, above the graph view (Tree or Pie), you get a column view list of your folders showing their size. As you drill down into the graphical portion, the list view updates to show the details of your new selection.<\/p>\n

This gives Disk Graph the best of both worlds, and Nick took the care to ensure that the list view is accessible to VoiceOver. I am very happy to stand corrected when I originally said none of the graphical apps were accessible.<\/p>\n

I have another addendum about Disk Graph after chatting with developer Nick. He pointed me the Layout option under the View menu, which is available when Tree View is selected. Under Layout, you can choose between several different ways the little blocks are laid out. The default, which is what broke my brain a little, is Snake \/ Spiral. I changed it to Stack, and it resembled the way GrandPerspective displays it, which makes more sense to me. You can also choose just Snake, which goes left to right by size, or Spiral, which spirals in by size. It\u2019s great that Nick gives us all these options.<\/p>\n

While he was helping me understand, he also explained that the grey boxes that mystified me and looked like printed circuits. He said these grey boxes represent a collection of files that, individually, are too small to display.<\/p>\n

EVEN MORE BREAKING NEWS<\/p>\n

By the time I woke up the day after this was published, Omni Group CEO Ken Case had a test build of OmniDiskSweeper that\u2019s accessible via VoiceOver and ready for us to test. He posted about it on Mastodon. How great is that?<\/p>\n

Also, I said that OmniDiskSweeper would only allow you to scan the entire drive, not a specific folder. Ken pointed out that you can<\/em> scan a single directory, but since it was non-obvious, he added a dedicated button that says “Open folder…” right on the first screen. I will consider this to be my personal button.<\/p>\n

I love to be corrected when I’m wrong, and I love the responsiveness of the developers. One more thing. Remember I said that GrandPerspective’s URL at SourceForge was missing the trailing “e”, so it’s grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net\/…<\/a>? Developer Erwin Bonsma wrote to me to explain that the truncated name is due to a historical name length restriction from Sourceforge. Fun facts to know and tell!<\/p>\n
