He describes the video recording setup he put together for tech conferences.

Jason uses the same camera as Steve, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 camera, to record video at CES. However, since his recordings are often solo, he has adapted a smartphone mount which allows him to use his phone as a teleprompter.

Using this setup, Jason doesn’t need to memorize all of the key features and specs of the device he’s describing while recording himself. Instead, he reads his notes from the phone’s display, which is positioned directly behind the camera. The result is natural since Jason apears to be looking directly at the camera while he reads his notes.

You can find Jason’s work at https://www.youtube.com/@UCjLhgO65TFpp0TOZhaoUnGA

Using a Screen Reader? click here

Transcript of Interview:

Allison: We’re using a DJI, what’s it called? The DJI Osmo Pocket 3, Osmo Pocket 3. But we ran into Jason Howell, who we know from many, many shows, including DTNS.

Jason: Yes.

Allison: And he’s using it in a slightly different way. We were looking at his camera. He’s got his camera in a tripod mount, but he’s also got some weird little mount on the other side of it.

Jason: A little doohickey in the back, and it’s a little weird when you look at it. I was so proud when I pieced this together. Here’s the problem, the conundrum.

Allison: The problem to be solved.

Jason: The problem to be solved is that I go to events like this, and someone says, “Here’s the phone. It does all these things.” My brain doesn’t work quite the way I hope it would. I remember some of the details some of the time, but I don’t remember all the details. So what I created is, this is a mount for my Osmo Pocket 3, and then this is a smartphone mount. Essentially, I punch out all the notes of the thing that they just told me about on the phone. And then I hold on, I’m messing it up, but I prop this back here. It’s essentially a teleprompter but behind the lens. So when I’m recording, my eyes are looking back here at the notes, but you don’t know when you look at the video.

Allison: Because you’re looking right into the lens.

Jason: I’m looking close enough to into the lens that it solves the problem.

Allison: Now, here’s the thing I don’t understand, it’s like 6 1/2 feet tall where you’re doing this. How does that work?

Jason: What we, well, because I’m a very tall person, I suppose is how it works. I just make sure, so here’s the thing, because a lot of this is for shorts stuff, and as you know, shorts, and actually videos in general, a lot of them are chopped, you suck out the air, you cut and everything. I might go down to here and then not be able to see what’s there. So I’ll just pause, and I’ll scroll it up, and then I continue. And then in the edit, it’s just a quick snip out of the air and I go.

Allison: Okay, so you just did you, so you talk to somebody that you’re about to interview.

Jason: Yeah.

Allison: You then get the details and then you sit there with your phone and you type.

Jason: I get the details.

Allison: And then you start the interview?

Jason: No, no, this is not for interview. This is for if I have a product and I just want to belt out a short and just be like, “This is the blah blah blah phone. It does blah blah blah blah blah all these things.” I’m not really good at remembering all these things. My brain doesn’t work the way it used to. So

Allison: I love this because I can say, “Okay, let me see. His name is Jason Howell. Okay. I’m here with,” and I stand and I turn and I look at your badge because it’s already gone. And what I love is the person that I’m interviewing invariably goes, “Oh yeah, I’m Jason Howell. I’m with ZDNet. I’m also on DTNS and I’m representing this product.” It’s like, “Yeah, the last three things, the first three things are gone. I only have the last word you said by now.”

Jason: Not only the last thing is the thing that I remember. No, I know exactly what you mean.

Allison: Oh, that’s very, very cool.

Jason: Thank you.

Allison: The other thing Jason is doing is, so we have, I’m talking to you right now through the DJI Pocket Mic, and Jason has his DJI Pocket Mic.

Jason: Not doing very much.

Allison: I’ve got one on a stick and I’m moving it over to the person and back, over and back, over and back, over and back like this. You just take your spare and you just clip it to the other person.

Jason: Well, heck yeah. I mean, I got two of these things.

Allison: I ended up with three somehow. I can’t really understand how I did that.

Jason: Oh, really? Yeah, that’s interesting. I don’t know how you did that either. But the Osmo has kind of a native ability to sync two of these automatically over to the device. So I just got a second one, and anytime I want to interview someone, I just have the other one and I go, “Ploop,” and we go.

Allison: So you just clip it to people? You just walk up and go shove it right on?

Jason: Yeah. No, I ask them first. I don’t just clip this to someone. You’re going to get punched if you do that, so.

Allison: Yeah, okay. Well, I might get away with it, but I’m not sure you could, right?

Jason: I don’t think I could either.

Allison: How about the magnet? Do you ever use the magnet?

Jason: Sometimes, although I don’t like, actually that would be weird, putting my hand under their shirt to do the magnet thing. I ask them if they want to do that.

Allison: Ever since that restraining order, they don’t let you do that anymore, right?

Jason: Let’s not talk about the restraining order, okay?

Allison: All right, this has been Jason Howell of ZDNet apparently.

Jason: Well, yeah, I didn’t know what to put there. I contribute. I write some freelance articles for ZDNet. But the reality, which is true, when it’s on your badge, people get really interested when you go to their booth.

Allison: You’re so impressive.

Jason: Yeah, I know. They’re like, “Oh, I know what that is.”

Allison: I love it. I love it. Well, this has been an on the spot reporting of all kinds of weird stuff from Jason Howell.

Jason: Thank you. That’s what I specialize in.

Allison and Steve bump into their long-time friend, Jason Howell, on the Pepcom show floor.
