Today is Sunday, October 4, 2026, and this is show number 1117.

https://media.blubrry.com/nosillacast/traffic.libsyn.com/nosillacast/NC_2026_10_04.mp3

mp3 download

Announcements

Tiny Mac Tips 5 on ScreenCastsONLINE

You know I love doing my Tiny Mac Tips for the NosillaCast. I’ve created 11 installments of them so far in audio and of course as blog posts. I want more people to learn from these, so I’ve created my 5th ScreenCastsONLINE video tutorial. In this one I teach:

Terminal to See a Calendar

Embiggen Text Windows in Web Forms in Safari

Fun with Tabs – Safari Only

Get Info vs. Show Inspector

Print to PDF … Faster

Reduce File Size with Quartz Filters in PDF Export in Preview

Fun with Volume and Brightness

If you follow the link in the shownotes, you can see a teaser video. If you’re not yet a member, you can get a free 7-day trial to watch the tutorial and any of the current back catalog. As always, I must caution you not to do it because you’ll find out how awesome the content is from all of the creators and you’ll want to become a member.

Travelogues of Our Adventures

I’ve talked often about our international travel adventures, and how I write a travelogue email every day to a list of folks who enjoy my stories. When we’re done with the trip, I take all of the emails and slop them into a giant Pages document with all of the embedded images. Steve then does the yeoman’s work of reformatting every photo and adding page breaks so the text and images work well together.

He’s finished the travelogue for Spain to see the eclipse, Portugal to drink port, and Ireland to see Bart. If you’d like to read our adventures, it’s posted as a PDF on our page Travelogues of Our Adventures. You can always get back to these by pushing the Special Pages button on podfeet.com.

If you’re thinking about taking a trip someday to any of the places we’ve visited, or you want to travel vicariously, I think you might enjoy my nearly fact-free travelogues.

Excuses

I’m going to make a confession to you now. I only have one (long) article for you. It’s not for lack of trying — I have a 24-minute article completely written … but I ran into so many technical difficulties this week that I didn’t have time to embed all of the images and proofread it. The ending might be more satisfying if it waits till next week anyway. We’ve got a great conversation with Adam Engst, so it won’t be a short show but I’d really hoped to get it done in time for the show.

Here’s an example of what kept me from succeeding.

My article you won’t get this week is all about Tailscale with Exit Nodes and Grants explained. I needed to connect to my Mac mini in order to take some screenshots, but it wasn’t showing up in Tailscale for me.

I didn’t see anything immediately wrong, but decided I should probably upgrade it to macOS 27. But of course I should really update all of the apps first. I tried to run the update, but I got a popup saying that one app couldn’t update, but it wasn’t from the App Store, and it wouldn’t tell me which one. I think it was Office 365 because it was complaining that I hadn’t logged into the license server in a while. FINE, I’ll log in. I’ll just pop open 1Password … and it wouldn’t launch.

I couldn’t reboot, I couldn’t open 1Password. So I downloaded 1Password again from the App Store … but it was version 7 instead of 8. It opened ok, but it yelled at me to get version 8. FINE. Off to 1Password.com to download the installer for version 8. But get this — the installer kept crashing on me!

Then I noticed that there was a Chrome window open. I had not launched it. I also couldn’t quit the app. I force-quit the app, but it came back. Oh no, this is probably part of my long-standing struggle trying to get Channels to work with Prismcast that installs a separate version of Chrome! Had to figure out how to uninstall Prismcast and Channels using Homebrew.

I force-quit Chrome again … and the Mac rebooted instantly!

At this point, I threw up my hands, went back to my studio…where one of the cats had barfed on my floor.

So yeah, you’re going to learn more about Tailscale next week, ok?

Articles

Siri AI Surprises and Delights … Most of the Time

Support the Show

You know who’s cool?
