Today is Sunday July 6, 2014 and this is show number 478. We’ve sure got interesting things to talk about – I’m on the bumpy road to see if 1Password is better for my in-laws than LastPass, I’ve got installment 3 of my Top 5 apps per Tammy’s request (this time it’s Mac apps), Mark Pouley has a review for us of something I’ve never seen before, and then in Chit Chat Across the Pond we’ve got the deputy editor of the Wired.co.UK Podcast, Olivia_Solon here to talk about STEM education and in particular getting more girls interested in the sciences and math. Before we dig into all that though, there’s something I HAVE to tell you about.

Blog Posts

Go See Particle Fever – NOW!

Bumpy Road Converting from LastPass to 1Password

NEET Sleeve to Protect Your Lightning Cables by Mark Pouley

Top 5 Favorite Mac Apps

Clarify

This week Microsoft committed a serious mistake when it confiscated (with a court order) 23 domains controlled by No-IP.com. They said they did it because No-IP wasn’t responding to requests to pull down domains that were sending out spam, but No-IP says they were never requested to pull them down. Either way, it was an awfully heavy handed method Microsoft chose, and it wiped out the dynamic domain hosting of virtually all No-IP users. You may remember hearing me talk about No-IP before, it’s the service Donald taught us to use for our home grown VPN servers!

Anyway, when Microsoft took down all of these domains, one of sites affected by the take down was our new friends over at Alpha Geek Radio. Todd Whitehead is the brains of the outfit and he was knocked completely off line! The good news is he’s brilliant and got right on a new solution. He got it fixed and then sent out an email telling all of the people who broadcast live how to change their broadcast server settings. I jumped right into it and fixed them, and then pulled up my trusty Clarify document I’d created when he taught me how to broadcast so I could update it. Of course Clarify documents sit nicely inside Evernote so it was super easy to find and open to update. However, when I got it opened, I realized that Todd had told us to change the wrong thing! Even better news is that since a) I’d used Clarify for my own notes, b) Clarify is easy to update, c) I chose to update it immediately, I was able to shoot Todd a correction right quick and he was able to retract his instructions before too many people got their server settings messed up.

I literally do not go a week without Clarify saving my bacon or someone else’s bacon! Wired sponsored a series of workshops for 12-18 year olds to encourage interest in technology, science, and creativity in those fields. The event is called Wired’s Next Generation.

We referenced the recent Verizon video that shows hong girls interested in science and the subtle messages from their parents and teachers that drive them away from the sciences. The video ends with the statistic that 66% of 4th grade girls say they’re interested in science and math, but only 14% of engineering college students are women.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP3cyRRAfX0&feature=kp

Olivia referenced Oliver Sacks at Radio Lab: http://www.radiolab.org/people/dr-oliver-sacks/

Allison referenced Physics Girl on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/physicswoman

You can find Olivia on Twitter at @olivia_solon.

If you’re in the UK and interested in getting your 12-18 year old into the 2014 WIRED Next Generation event, it’s on Saturday October 18 and there’s a link in the shownotes to the WIRED event.

That’s going to wind this up for this week, many thanks to our sponsor for helping to pay the bills, Blue Mango Learning at bluemangolearning.com makers of Clarify.
