So Many Conversations

South Bay Mac Users Group

I have been busy for the last week and a half! A week and a half ago Wednesday I did a talk for the local South Bay Mac Users Group where I went through about fifteen of my Mac Tiny Tips. You’ve heard all the content before, but it was fun to spread the tips to even more folks.

Naples Mac User Group

Then this most recent Wednesday, I did a talk at the Naples Mac User Group, run by Chita Hunter. Adam Engst introduced me to Chita, and since I’d not spoken to her group before, she and I had a pre-meeting where we rolled around ideas of what her group might be interested in. We chose me teaching Audio Hijack, which is kind of a harder topic than most user groups are ready for, but she was sure it would be a hit.

I’ve spoken to a lot of user groups, and Chita’s is ahead of the pack in terms of organization and of a tightly run ship. She said to get on at 8:15 AM but the talk would start at 8:30. When I got on the Zoom call, there were FIFTY PEOPLE already connected but I don’t know how many more came in before 8:30. There was collegial chatter back and forth, and about a minute before the start time, the person running the Zoom call put four of us as Spotlights (stopping other video from covering us up). At about 11 seconds before start time, he said, it was time to start and at 8:30 on the dot we started.

I can tell stories of how at I forced meetings I wasn’t even running to start on time, so this was a big hit for me. Here’s the really fun part; people were interested in the topic! There were lots of smart questions, most of which I could even answer about Audio Hijack. Chita has this process tightly controlled too. People write a quick question in the chat sidebar, and when an good time came for her to break into my talk, she would unmute the person so they could ask it. I could tell she’s got them on a tight leash though because there were zero rambling, drawn out questions where someone really just wanted to talk. The questions were as clear and crisp as you could hope for.

NMUG has 42 weekly meetings a year, along with live classes, a message board, and a fabulous website. Membership is open to anyone, but there’s a $40/year fee to join. They don’t publish their videos of events, because they want to keep this tight membership, and obviously it’s working.

If you’d like to check out NMUG, you can get a free 30-day trial at naplesmug.com/…. Heck, you could watch my talk during that 30 days!

Chita is a force to be reckoned with — she’s already signed me up to give another talk next year.

Perkins School for the Blind

That wasn’t it for my busy week, on Thursday I had an interesting conversation with the Perkins School for the Blind. It was kind of odd, I was asked there to talk about how I got started in my interest in accessibility and how I’ve seen it change over the years. The group I was talking to was the IT staff, and I’m not sure I added a lot to what they already know, but it was fun talking to them. We have some future plans for me to chat with their CTO maybe for Chit Chat Across the Pond so that should be fun too.

You’ll hear more about my busy week in a little bit when we talk about my work doing experiments with Chris Cooke and Remote Incident Manager!

Support the Show

The cool kids have been sending in photos of their cool new NosillaCast 20th anniversary shirts. I have been a big fan of the vintage shirts for their softness, but they convinced me to give the regular 100% cotton shirts a try. I bought the red one for myself, and it’s brilliant! The colors really pop on the red, and the shirt is just as soft. If you’d like to be one of the cool kids by showing your joy about the show with the world, you can get a t-shirt, a mug, or a tote bag, all announcing 20 Years of Podcasting. Simply go to podfeet.com/shop.

And yes, I understand the danger of wearing a red shirt.
