Conversation of Things Podcast – Episode 1 with Allison Sheridan

This week I had the great honor of being on the very first episode of a new podcast called the Conversations of Things. Joe Dugandzic of Smarter Home Life is the host, and it’s going to be an interview show with tech people about the Internet of Things and Home Automation. Joe is such a cool guy – I feel like I’ve known him for years but we only met six months ago. We had a great time chatting. You can listen to the audio at smarterhomelife.com/…, but he also let me embed the video into podfeet.com. He hasn’t submitted the podcast to iTunes yet but he’ll get on that shortly.

NC #628 Dumb Question Corner, B&H Photo, GoPro Karma Drone, Hunting Black Bars of Doom

Chit Chat Across the Pond Lite and Programming By Stealth are both searchable now in iTunes, the Apple Podcasts app, along with Downcast, Pocketcasts and Overcast. I put out a call for help – I need recorded reviews some time next week for the following week’s show because we’re going on yet another vacation. Videos are now a button on the podfeet.com home page so you can get to them more easily and I explain how Helma helped me make that happen. In Dumb Question Corner I’ll answer Rod Simmons’s boss’s question about how to mark up emails on an iPad Pro. We’ve got two more NAB 2017 interviews: we’ll talk to B&H about their mobile microphones, and GoPro about their new Karma Drone. I’ll walk you through all of the intricacies of tech goodness in how I think I’ve finally rid podfeet.com of the Black Bars of Doom (trademark Donald Burr).

Dumb Question Corner – How to Automatically Back Up Podcasts from iTunes

Our dumb question this week comes from Kurt. He nearly violated one of my cardinal rules in his question, but I’ve decided to allow it. He wrote:

Itunes podcastsHi Allison, this dumb question gets dangerously close to the red line of No iTunes Questions, but I thought I would ask it anyway…

I’d like to be able to archive podcasts on a dedicated media drive. I currently do this manually, copying them out of the appropriate iTunes directory once or twice a year to the media drive and deleting them from the original directory. I always worry that going behind the back of iTunes like this is going to mess something up.

In an ideal world a folder action or an automator script would just watch a certain podcast directory, and copy the file to the media drive automagically every time that iTunes downloads one. Then I could set iTunes to delete podcasts after they have been listened to, and I’d have the best of both worlds – a lightweight, trim iTunes folder, and archived backups of podcasts. However, I’ve never really grokked Apple automation methods.

Or do you have any other ideas? The goal is to free up space from the gigabytes of podcasts that accumulate in my home folder on an SSD while retaining the ability to occasionally go back and listen to an older podcast without downloading.

Cheers, thanks for the entertaining weekly dose of tech,

Kurt

Melissa’s Lost Voicemails, AKA Why I Do the Podcast

Old telephone with rolaidsYou know I do the podcast for the love of talking about tech. I get a big kick out of helping people and one of the ways I do that is with the tutorials I post on podfeet.com. I don’t know how many people find them or get value from them. I do get comments on many of them, especially the tutorial I did on how to fix the AppleTV problem when it says it will take 7 hours to play rented movies. That one has evidently saved marriages and brought peace and harmony to many homes.

But every once in a while there’s a story that makes all the work worth while.

NC #606 Eye Chart Radio, Yahoo Breach and MD5, Amazon Duet, Nomorobo for iOS, Shelly & Steve Poems

We WILL have episodes of the NosillaCast (and live shows) on both Christmas and New Years day (unlike those other slacker podcasters). Check out last week’s episode of Chit Chat Across the Pond with Chris Ashley from the SMR Podcast (fun with Windows!). I’m one of the new rotating co-hosts for Eye Chart Radio with Mike LaPlante. Bart comes on for just a few minutes to chat about the ginormous Yahoo breach of 1 BILLION accounts is even worse than it sounds. He explains why it was so absurdly bad that Yahoo was hashing passwords with MD5. Terry Austin sends in a review of Nomorobo for the iPhone. Shelly Brisbin does a dramatic reading of her poem, “I Did Not Buy the MacBook Pro”. I’ll tell you about a way to achieve simultaneous onsite and offsite backups using the new Amazon Duet drive from Seagate.

Apple CarPlay Gives a Useful Interface in Volkswagen Jetta – by Dorothy R

Guest Post by Dorothy R (aka @maclurker)

Carplay main screenAs soon as Allison heard I had a new car that included CarPlay, she had to know more. All the details, in their technical glory. Specifically a NosillaCast review. So before I could even get started, I had to define …

The problem to be solved: how to make better use of my phone while driving when my car only has an Aux connection and no BlueTooth.

Solution: Buy a new car with CarPlay.

I am now the owner of a new Volkswagen. While I am sorry to leave my Civic behind, I love all the new technology. Especially Apple CarPlay, which promises to marry my phone and car, leaving me with a smooth uninterrupted experience. I should point out that Hubs has a new car too. A Ford with CarPlay. So we’ve been able to exchange notes on what’s the same and what isn’t. But, it seems pretty consistent. CarPlay is CarPlay, no matter which car it runs on.

NC #592 Portable Car Jump Starter, Two Dumb Questions, Podcast Playlists, Podfeet Patreon, New IRC Chat Server

This week’s Chit Chat Across the Pond is Lynda Gousha and I talking about the new hotness, and I recommend listening to the latest Let’s Talk Apple at lets-talk.ie/… if you want to really understand the Irish tax kerfuffle with Apple. We got the chance to actually use the PowerAll Power Bank to jump start our car. We have two Dumb Questions, one about how to figure out what photos aren’t in any album in Apple Photos, and the second asking why people care about Playlists. That launches me into an explanation of how I finally was able to get Pocketcasts to do what I lost when they removed playlists. We’ve now got a Patreon set up for the NosillaCast, so please head over to podfeet.com/patreon and pledge some money to help the show, but ONLY if you can afford it! I’ve decided to take on the challenge of building my own IRC chat server (with a lot of help from Bart of course) so I walk you through what we’ve done so far.
