Unmute Presents – our community festive gift guide

You’ve heard contributions on the NosillaCast from both Marty Sobo and Michael Babcock, and together they host the podcast called Unmute Presents which is a tech podcast with an EVER so slight blind accessibility slant. They asked me to contribute to their “Community Festive Gift Guide” episode and I was more than glad to contribute. I listened to the show and I added a couple of them to my own holiday wish list. Check it out at the link in the shownotes or you can look for Unmute Presents in your podcatcher of choice.

In the conversation with Tom, he was using Be My Eyes to add captions using AI to his photos before posting. As you should never do live during a recording, I installed the app on my iPhone and I didn’t seem to have the same interface in Be My Eyes as Tom. I’m going to do a tutorial on how to get this to work, but for those who are curious right now, I figured out what was wrong.

When you first open Be My Eyes, you tell it whether you will be requiring assistance, or if you’re willing to give someone else assistance over the phone. I told it I would require assistance, but then I logged in with the account I created back in 2015 in hopes of providing others assistance. Sandy Foster did this as well back then but we’ve never been called.

Anyway, logging into this existing account flipped the app away from “needing assistance”. I deleted the app and logged into a fresh account that I told it did need assistance and now I was able to see the AI tools Tom can see. Spoiler, what Tom taught me with Be My Eyes is nothing short of amazing. But you’ll have to wait for me to write my tutorial to hear more about it!
