I’ve been feeling like the unluckiest Apple fangirl of all time with all the problems I’ve had with my Apple gear in the last year. Most recently you might remember the saga back in August of my 2016 MacBook Pro going belly up (wouldn’t charge). It would only stand out in your memory because my 2013 backup MacBook Pro couldn’t connect to Apple’s services so I ended up asking executives at Apple to give me a hand.
Anyway, that all got resolved and I got my 2016 MacBook Pro back with a shiny new logic board. I haven’t wanted to mention it because I was hoping the problem would just go away on its own, but I’ve been having a problem with the Mac ever since I got it back. Do you do that too, go into denial and just wish these things away?
This is a bit of a different show – it’s primarily the four part story of my saga dealing with two catastrophic failures with Apple in a single week. It’s quite a tech story with a lot to interesting angles. After that Bart joins us with Security Bits.
It’s time for the final post about my MacBook Pro and iCloud woes from this week, because after four full days, both are finally working! The path there was fascinating.
To recap, my 2016 MacBook Pro went into Apple repair because it wouldn’t charge, and my 2013 MacBook Pro, which was restored from a backup of the 2016, couldn’t access any Apple cloud services. My little friend Erica from Executive Relations had escalated my repair, while my little friend Senior Advisor Specialist Joe was helping me crack the code on iCloud with engineering.
As the saga progressed on my 2013 MacBook Pro being unable to contact any Apple services (no apps would run, no Mail would come in, no access to my iCloud data), I decided to see if I could get a response out of the executives at Apple. I originally wrote to Tim Cook, CEO of Apple but then forwarded the email on to Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering. He seems like a swell guy with that pretty hair and all.
I entitled this article “AppleCare Needs a Frequent Flyer Program” because if they had such a program, I’d be getting all kinds of free perks by now. If someone asked me if they should buy anything from Apple right now, there would be hesitation in my response. It’s that bad.
David Ginsburg of the In Touch with iOS podcast sent in a recording describing the unusual problem he had where Apple shipped him with an operating system actually newer than the one you can download. I’ve started a series called Tiny Tips, and the first one is why you should create a folder called Delete Me. I’ve got part 2 of my Affinity Photo for iPad review/walk through and then we’ve got Security Bits with Bart Busschots.

I got the keyboard replaced in store, but then the new keyboard with my original iPad Pro started having weird graphics glitches. At my second Genius Bar appointment they pointed out that it was unclear whether it was the iPad or the keyboard that was failing, so they replaced the keyboard and the iPad itself. That sounded awesome at the time, but I kinda wish I hadn’t said yes to that.
Immediately on bringing my new devices home, the 2nd iPad with the 2nd keyboard started rebooting spontaneously while I was using it and even if I wasn’t. I disconnected the iPad from the keyboard and it still rebooted spontaneously. Off to my 3rd Genius Bar appointment. This time, they let me keep the keyboard, but gave me a 3rd iPad Pro. Chris Ashley from the SMR Podcast was our guest on Chit Chat Across the Pond talking about the new Microsoft hardware and OS announcements this week, I did a deep dive into Finder modifications on ScreenCasts Online, and Bart Busschots had his debut on the Daily Tech News Show. We’ve got two NAB interviews. We talk with Lacie about their 2big Thunderbolt 3 doc with capacity up to 20TB. Then we learn about the Brother head-mounted HD monitor that allows videographers to be comfortable while their camera is in weird positions. I go on a bit of a rant about how Google has seemingly lost interest in supporting Android phones that they’re still selling. Then I’ll tell you about how I found out that the keyboard for my iPad Pro has a secret recall and how I found out.
I know I’ve done a rant about the following subject before but I have to do it again. And of course I will start by telling a story and then end with the moral of this story.
A few months ago, when I awoke my 12.9″ iPad Pro, it had a message saying, “This accessory is not supported by this device”. That seemed odd, and for some reason I assumed it was irritated by my Apple Pencil. I dismissed the message with no ill effects and I moved on.
Over time, this same unsupported accessory message has been coming up more and more frequently. Eventually I noticed that my iPad Pro wasn’t actually typing on the screen. I’d tear the iPad off of the keyboard and let the magnet grab it again and that would fix it. Curious, but not a big problem. Continue reading “Seriously, Call AppleCare”
