Hi, this is Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast Apple Podcast, hosted at, a technology geek podcast with an EVER so slight Apple bias. Today is Sunday, November 17, 2019, and this is show number 758.

I’m sure by now you’ve heard the great news that Apple came out with the rumored 16″ MacBook Pro. I’ve been waiting for this machine and immediately jumped online and bought it. After the fact I’ve been listening to folks talking about it who got to play with it, like Marco Arment and Jason Snell and they are positively gushing about it, so I’m super excited.

The options to configure this notebook will have to silence the critics. While RAM in previous MacBooks Pro was limited to 16GB, you can configure these new ones to 64GB. Think about that, it wasn’t that long ago that Apple sold notebooks with 64GB of disk. Now I thought 2TB of SSD was enough for anyone, but the new one can be configured to 8TB of storage. Isn’t that bananas! I think you should applaud me that while I did go for 64GB of RAM, I held strong and only got a 4TB SSD.

I cannot wait to run the live show on this beast and see whether an 8-core, 2.4GHz i9 with the top end graphics and 64GB of RAM can handle everything I throw at it and not have the fans blazing at me throughout the show.

I figured go big, or go home, so I paid the extra $8 shipping to get it as early as this coming Thursday! So now the question is, do I do a pave and not migrate apps so it’s a true clean install? Or do I migrate what I just finished building a month ago and migrated from Mojave to macOS Catalina?

Chit Chat Across the Pond

This week Bart Busschots takes us back through JavaScript function objects, explaining the three different ways to define a function. It was great to have them all together to refresh our memory. He explains how only one method is hoisted, which lead him to explain the medieval history reference of “hoisted by your own petard”. We went from there to function scope and enjoyed some time going through advanced arguments which is way more fun than it sounds. Things took a turn for the weird when Bart explained fully-simplified fat arrow syntax as all common language conventions disappeared. At one point we talked about Bart wearing a tutu. You’ll have to listen to learn how that was actually in context of learning JavaScript.

You can listen to this episode in your podcatcher of choice in the Programming By Stealth feed or you can listen while reading along with Bart’s fabulous tutorial show notes at…

I had the same dentist for 48 years. That changed recently when he retired. After much anxiety, I found a new dentist. Guess what? He’s better than my old dentist and my old dentist was good!

I recently installed macOS Catalina. When I went to back up with my longtime program, SuperDuper, I received an error message stating my disk needed to be erased and reformatted. SuperDuper gave very weak instructions on how to reformat. I felt some anxiety about erasing my back up. I asked myself, “What would Allison do?”

After reading her enthusiastic review, I downloaded the trial version Of Carbon Copy Cloner. CCCs instructions were detailed and included easy to follow screenshots. CCC was better than SuperDuper and SuperDuper is good! BTW, I never did make it through the trial version. I immediately bought the CCC license.

I couldn’t love this more, Margaret!

I should never type up comments while talking on the phone. I brought up my dentist because he’s like SuperDuper…old school & longtime good. In both cases I now have modern and better.

    Thanks again.
