NC #780 Three TV Tracking Apps, Time is Weird, Timezones Explained, Security Bits

Before I get started, I have to make a correction on the pricing of the Cubo Ai camera I reviewed last week. I told you it was normally $300 and was $50 off so down to $250. When the lovely folks at Cubo saw my article they explained that the Amazon price of $250 was before the $50 off coupon, so this fabulous AI camera set up with three different hardware configurations is $200, not $250.

Chit Chat Across the Pond – Programming By Stealth

This week’s episode of Chit Chat Across the Pond was of the Programming By Stealth variety. I know I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but it was a spectacularly fun episode. In the early days of Programming By Stealth, Bart tried to explain JavaScript classes, objects, and instances. He talked about it in Installment 17 before ES6, and then took another run at it in installments 27-31. But it never felt to Bart like he had explained it in a way that made it clear.

In installment 94, Bart finally nails it. I told him the shownotes for this installment might be the best he’s ever done. Everything he explains is clear and concise, the examples are superb, and we get to say Hoonyaker a lot. Instead of being frustrated and confused, I was smiling through all of it because I finally get it. I also told him that I feel far less stupid than I did before because I always thought it was my failing that I didn’t get it. I enjoyed this so much I drew Bart a picture of what he’d taught and he said I nailed it!

As always you can listen in your podcatcher of choice by searching for Programming By Stealth or listen at www.podfeet.com/…, you can read along with Bart’s spectacular tutorial shownotes at pbs.bartificer.net/….

Chit Chat Across the Pond – Mikah Sargent

I did something crazy this week – I recorded not one but TWO Chit Chat Across the Ponds! I also recorded a Chit Chat Across the Pond Lite with Mikah Sargent of the Clockwise Podcast and the TWiT network. Mikah was talking on some show about how much he loves TextExpander, and I thought it might be fun to have a session where we talked about our favorite TextExpander snippets.

We found we use the same TextExpander trigger character but in different ways. We discussed our most-used snippets and why. Mikah told me about some very cool TextExpander snippets Brett Terpstra has shared with the world . We talked about how cool we think the Public Group snippets are that you can download from. Mikah’s favorites are Accented Words (voilà), Emoji Cheat Sheet (💩), Symbols (⇧) and Text Utilities. We even covered nested snippets and the problem they solve.

Go check it out in your podcatcher of choice by searching for Chit Chat Across the Pond Lite, and of course you can listen along over at Podfeet.com – CCATP #634 — Mikah Sargent on Favorite TextExpander Snippets

3 Apps to Help You Track TV Shows & Movies — by Jill from the Northwoods

I love Jill’s reviews! She’s got the perfect combination of the problem to be solved, very specific details without droning on and on, and a light touch of humor throughout. I do need to make one tiny correction. The price of Television Time, the first iOS app she described, is $5 in the App Store, not $3. That’s the app I think I’m going to buy to see if it’s better than Steve and my Airtable database. That’s going to be hard to beat though, we sure love it!

Allister Explains Timezones (rerun from August 2009)

While I was working on the timezone nonsense in my clock and while I was writing up that article, I was talking to Allister Jenks in New Zealand on Telegram. I mentioned that my earliest memory of him contributing to the show was when he did an article about timezones for the NosillaCast about a hundred years ago. I distinctly remember listening to it while we were driving around in Hawaii. The best part of this explanation of timezones is that Allister is 100% sincere that he thinks he’s making it easy to do in your head. And to me, the longer he went on, the more insane it sounded.

Thanks to the magic of search in Gmail, he was able to find the article from August 2009 and the recording he made. We decided it would be fun to play it back for you. Perhaps you’ll be on his side that this is easy to follow the way he explains it, or perhaps you will think he must be joking as I did.

Pledge Break

If you’ve been listening for any length of time, you know that this show is not sponsored by advertising, it’s sponsored by you, through weekly pledges through Patreon and one-off donations through Paypal. A massive percentage of people don’t have disposable income right now and I 100% understand that. In fact, you may have disposable income right now but are making the choice to support your local food bank, and I 1000% support that as well.

And some people, like April Mendis, heard about Amazon dropping my affiliate status and decided to double her pledge on Patreon. It has been heartwarming to hear the support from many of you about Amazon but I’m not mad at them and I don’t hold any hard feelings. April is a rock star, as are all of you who contribute by going to podfeet.com/patreon or podfeet.com/paypal and donate what you can to help pay the bills around here.

Hey look at the good news – with conventions being called off right and left, my costs are going to go down quite a bit!
