CES 2017: Luma Home Mesh Router

Allison interviews Daniel Peck from Luma about their new WiFi mesh router. Luma routers are controlled from the Luma iOS or Android app and use BlueTooth LE for easy set-up. A set of three Luma routers is generally sufficient to provide high speed WiFi throughout a normal home. The setting is the Pepcom Digital Experience show floor.

Here’s the headline about Luma in the Verge Review:

“This new router lets you spy on what everyone in the house is doing”

Much of the “special” monitoring seems to require that Luma the company be actively sucking up and storing data about what’s happening on your system. Storing every web site visited for a year. Hard to believe that’s not being done on a remote server, but couldn’t find any info on the Luma site how it actually works.

Given my bad luck posting links, if you’re interested in the verge review it is from November 5, 2015, when Luma was in pre-release publicity phase. Should be able to find it from the headline above.

Thanks for talking to the Luma folks.

At first I groaned at having to watch a video on my iPhone.

Then I realized I could AirPlay it to my big screen TV and give the video the proper attention it requires.

It was ironic and good product placement by their competitor Eero there in the background! Nice positioning of the camera by Steve for that double take
