NC #592 Portable Car Jump Starter, Two Dumb Questions, Podcast Playlists, Podfeet Patreon, New IRC Chat Server

This week’s Chit Chat Across the Pond is Lynda Gousha and I talking about the new hotness, and I recommend listening to the latest Let’s Talk Apple at lets-talk.ie/… if you want to really understand the Irish tax kerfuffle with Apple. We got the chance to actually use the PowerAll Power Bank to jump start our car. We have two Dumb Questions, one about how to figure out what photos aren’t in any album in Apple Photos, and the second asking why people care about Playlists. That launches me into an explanation of how I finally was able to get Pocketcasts to do what I lost when they removed playlists. We’ve now got a Patreon set up for the NosillaCast, so please head over to podfeet.com/patreon and pledge some money to help the show, but ONLY if you can afford it! I’ve decided to take on the challenge of building my own IRC chat server (with a lot of help from Bart of course) so I walk you through what we’ve done so far.

Hi this is Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast Mac Podcast, hosted at Podfeet.com, a technology geek podcast with an EVER so slight Macintosh bias. Today is Sunday September 11, 2016 and this is show number 592.

Chit Chat Across the Pond

In this week’s Chit Chat Across the Pond, I asked Lynda Gousha to join me to talk about the new announcements from Apple. This was a bad announcement day for me because my iPhone 6 is two years old, and so are Lindsay and Kyle’s. Now they’re grown up people with real jobs, but Lindsay asked if she could have whatever phone came out as her birthday present in August. She was willing to wait for it till the new one came out. Kyle’s birthday is in December, and he was willing to wait for the iPhone 7, but it’s always annoying to have birthday and Christmas right on top of each other so we pulled his purchase up. Then Steve said he wanted to get the new Apple Watch Series 2 and I couldn’t let him have that and not me.

Oh, and I’d already decided to get the 7 Plus because I would really like a larger screen for these old eyes. When I saw the dual camera system, I knew I had to try it. And I talked Lindsay into going with the 7 Plus. After sprinkling AppleCare all over those five devices and the 9% sales tax rate here, I’m going to have to sell off the cats. So let me know if you want to buy two slightly used computer-programmer named cats. Tesla stays though.

Anyway, check out Chit Chat Across the Pond with Lynda Gousha at podfeet.com/….

Let’s Talk Apple

I’ve mentioned quite a few times that Bart Busschots has two really great shows, Let’s Talk Photography and Let’s Talk Apple. He does each one once a month and he just had his Let’s Talk Apple show with a panel of Gazmaz, Nick Riley and Elaine Giles. The reason I’m bringing it up is that Bart did a fantastic job of explaining the whole Irish tax/Apple/European Commission fiasco. Not surprisingly, he understands it really well and added some pretty significant pieces of information I haven’t heard discussed anywhere else. If you’ve wanted to learn more about the issue and to listen to some very enjoyable folks talking Apple news from a monthly review perspective, go check out at lets-talk.ie/….

Patreon

Remember a few weeks back when I told you that if there’s something you’d like to me to do on the podcast or blog, you should just ask? I told you it was no guarantee that I’d do it, but it was worth a shot. Last week Chad Baker took me at my word and sent this email:

Hi Allison Love the podcast! I wanted to suggest adding a Pateron link to your “Ways to help”. I’ve started supporting several podcasts via Patreon and would love to add Nosillacast to that list.

Well I don’t want to deny Chad, so I did it! I thought it would be really hard but it was actually pretty easy. And most importantly it’s easy for you too. Go to podfeet.com/patreon, sign up to be a Patron and pledge how much you think each show is worth. Every time I post a NosillaCast, your pledge will go to support the show. I thought the math might get too complex if I included Chit Chat Across the Pond too, so I’ll only post the NosillaCast shows in Patreon.

But here’s the deal. If you’re having trouble making ends meet, or if you’re not putting enough money away in your kid’s college fund, I don’t want you to pledge to Patreon. This money will go to help fund the show, paying for servers and hosting and tools to make it happen, but that should never be put ahead of providing for your family. I’ve actually hesitated all this time on doing Patreon because I’m worried people who can’t afford to will donate.

I announced the new Patreon through social media and in just a few hours, Mark, Denise, Brett, Richard, Claus, Michael, Kevin, Dorothy and of course Chad had all pledged to help the show! I was floored! Get this, Bob Leigh actually sent me a thank you note for setting up the Patreon! How crazy is that. The NosillaCastaways rock.
