NC #660 Google Year in Search, 2017 What Apps Am I Still Using Part 2, Vimmy & Oh Sh-t Git, Hunt for Missing Menus

We’ll start with part 2 of my year in review of the apps and hardware I’ve talked about in 2017 and I’ll let you know whether I’m still using them. After that, we’ll be joined by Caleb Fong with a couple of Tiny Tip segments on tools for programming. Then Denise Crown will give us a shootout on US streaming service she’s been testing to see if she can cut the cord. Then I’ll wind up the show with a story of missing menus for my father-in-law and how the NosillaCastaways, the Mac Geek Gab listeners and of course Bart helped me solve the problem.

Hi, this is Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast Apple Podcast, hosted at Podfeet.com, a technology geek podcast with an EVER so slight Apple bias. Today is Friday, December 29, 2017, and this is show number 660. Yep, we managed to squeeze in another show before year end.

Chit Chat Across the Pond

I’m afraid I didn’t squeeze in a Chit Chat Across the Pond but we’ll be back next week with Bart on Programming By Stealth.

Google Year in Search 2017

Every year Google does a Year in Search video. It’s a pretty cool compilation of things people searched for in Google all done in video. Well this year our own Steve Sheridan had a clip of one of his videos included in Google’s Year in Search 2017! The search term was “how to record the eclipse”. You’ll probably remember that Steve did a fantastic video of the eclipse and a segment on the NosillaCast on how he pulled it off. Here’s the funny part. Google pulled a ONE-SECOND clip from his video to include in their video. The guy shown in one-second clip is pointing at the eclipse and is named Rohit. Even funnier, they flipped the video left-to-right.

Anyway, it’s a fun one-second of fame for Steve (he says he’s owed another 14 minutes and 50 seconds) so I put a link to the video in the shownotes so you can see it. Watch VERY carefully at exactly 1’02” into the video to see Steve’s contribution.

2017 Year in Review Part 2 – What Am I Still Using?

Tiny Tip – Vimmy & Oh Sh-t Git! By Caleb Fong

Thanks so much for that Caleb, and a big shout out to Caleb’s wife Elaine – so glad you like the show too!

US Streaming TV Shoot Out – by Denise Crown

Thanks so much, Denise, that’s really cool. I haven’t convinced Steve to even think about cutting the cord, but it sounds like Sling is where I’d start. My favorite thing in this review was that Denise has funneled all the TV subscription savings into her 401K to save for retirement. That’s brilliant!

Denise mentioned that I’d stopped paying for Plex. I’ve been paying for the Plex Pass for ages, which allows my kids to connect to my Plex server from their houses to watch our movies. I had shut it off because I thought it wasn’t working through my multiple layers of routers, but I just found out from the kids that it WAS working all this time and I just turned it back on.
